Nate Shaw took his bachelor’s degree from Capital University (2006), studying jazz and contemporary piano under Mark Flugge. He has also studied classical piano with Dr. Tianshu Wang and Hammond B3 organ with Adrienne Hindmarsh. In 2006 he toured the U.S. and overseas as keyboardist with the Columbus-based group ‘Lt. Dan’s New Legs’ (LDNL). In 2010 he took his master’s degree from the International Centre for Music Studies (ICMuS) at Newcastle University, under the supervision of Dr. Nanette de Jong.
In addition to academic studies, Nate served as jazz/contemporary piano instructor at ICMuS, and seized several performing opportunities, including pianist for the university salsa band. As a keyboardist/organist, Nate performed with the explosive Afro-jazz-funk group ‘Hannabiell and Midnight Blue.’ With the help of Alx Alfaro and ‘Dale! Burundanga’ he ventured into unknown territory on the piano. Studying the rhythms of the Peruvian Cajón, Nate utilized montuno rhythms rarely explored on the piano.
Nate returned to Columbus, Ohio in 2011 where he continues to work and study as a teacher, pianist/composer, and musicologist.
Nate has performed with and alongside many artists and organizations, including the following:
