Benjamin graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in Psychology and a minor in music. While at Ohio State, he performed as a regular member in The Ohio State University Marching Band, the OSU Jazz Ensemble, Art Blakey Jazz Combo, the OSU Symphonic Band and several other groups in the OSU School of Music. Ben studied jazz and improvisation extensively at OSU with Jim Masters, Anthony Stanco, Shawn Wallace, and Bryan Olshesky.
He performs in Columbus frequently with Vaughn Weister’s Famous Jazz Orchestra, the Rick Brunetto Big Band, and has also performed with the Columbus and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras. He is a key member of several Columbus acts spanning a variety of genres, including The Bluewater Kings (Top 40 hits), Al Son del Iya (salsa), The Big Badd (funk), BC6 (hard bop), Kinfolk (neo-soul/jazz), and Lucky Haskins (rock/soul/blues). Ben also does freelance work around the city, sitting in regularly with bands such as Doc Robinson (folk rock), Safety Squad (jazz fusion), The Whirlybirds (old school swing), Trombones Plus, Bonified Swing (straight-ahead jazz) Waves de Ache (latin jazz) and others.
Benjamin firmly believes that the ability to understand and create music is a universal skill set present in all human beings. Within all of us is a master artist waiting to emerge. He hopes to awaken in his students a sense of passion, freedom and a can-do attitude when it comes to learning to play music of all styles.
